About the Asian Leopard Cat

spacer

An ALC, Asian Leopard Cat (Felis bengalensis) is similar in build and size to a domestic cat, although it does have longer legs and back. It is a very beautiful cat with amazing markings. There are about 7-10 sub species and their background colour can vary, with cats from the Northern regions having a yellowish-grey colour while those from Southern regions are more yellow-ochre.  Of all the small cats, it is probably one of the most common and widespread. They can be found in semi desert, agricultural areas and forestry especially near water. They can also be found near human habitats.  All of the ALC have a spotted or ringed tail with a black tip and four black bands running from forehead to neck.

ALC are solitary cats who are for the most part nocturnal. They are incredibly versatile and will hunt on land, in trees and in water. They also prey on a wide variety of food including insects, amphibians, fish, fawns as well as the more obvious rodents and birds. They will often make their dens in caves or under roots of trees and the male ALC will often help raise his young.
